With the development of the Chinese economy, China’s energy consumption has grown at a rapid rate. Compared to developed countries, China has a disadvantage of lower efficiency on energy technology and utilisation.

The consumption of coal has continuously increased in recent years. Coal-fired power plants, with their features of high consumption and heavy pollution, have become the main problem for national pollution control and treatment. Due to this, energy-saving and emission control strategies are needed to improve efficiency and reduce pollution. A valuable way to approach this is to upgrade existing thermal power plants. Shandong Union Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has developed technology which both enhances an existing coal plants efficiency and reduces its pollutant emissions by using an integrated gasification combined cycle process.

Shandong is a major province of economy in China. In the whole province, more than 100 thermal power plants are waiting to be upgraded. Since its foundation in 2006, Shandong Union Energy Technology Co. Ltd has taken on energy saving and environment protection as part of its own responsibilities. The company is also using its administration skills, resources, and technology to develop and support Shandong thermal power plant upgrading projects. With close cooperation with people from all walks of life and innovative integration, Shandong Union Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has developed its world advanced “High-efficiency Clean Regional Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Cogeneration Process System”.

The main content of this project process is replacing existing coal-fired boilers with high-efficiency pressurised gasifier, gas turbine, and HRSG, utilising the original turbine to form combined cycle heat and power cogeneration. After upgrading, the coal cost will become 45%~55% (originally 75~85%) of the total cost, and the emission control of sulfur dioxide, particulate, and nitrogen oxides will meet international advanced level. Each project can save water over 1 million tons annually.

This process system is economical and reliable, it has been greatly supported and affirmed by multiple levels of government in Shandong. Three of the proposed upgrade projects have received governmental approval and are now under preparation.
